Field report

My career at Alfred Kochen GmbH & Co. KG

I graduated from high school in 1998 and then went straight into basic military service. During my time in the army, I applied to the company Alfred Kochen in Hamburg for an apprenticeship as a “wholesale and foreign trade clerk”. And indeed, I was invited and took my first step into the offices on the 2nd floor of Poststrasse 14-16. Who could have guessed at that moment that I would be allowed to start my training in 1999 and then, after successfully completing it at the beginning of 2002, be taken on in one of the purchasing and sales departments.

What convinced me of Alfred Kochen at the time was the Hanseatic atmosphere in the offices in the middle of the city and the charismatic contacts. The training concept also convinced me to take on full responsibility in the departments as an apprentice.

In October 2002, I decided to start studying, but that didn’t stop Alfred Kochen or me from working in all areas of the company for the next 7 years. During this time, as a student temp, I literally did everything there was to do. From letter carrier and sample packer to buyer and salesman to janitor with cleaning and painting work, all activities were represented.

From 2010, after completing my business studies, I worked successfully in logistics at well-known companies such as STUTE, Kühne & Nagel and DSV. I worked there as Operations Manager until the end of 2022 and was responsible for a logistics center with 50 employees.

I’ve been back at Alfred Kochen in Poststrasse in Hamburg since September 2022, where I work as an authorized signatory and member of the management team. I think it’s fantastic to be back after a break of almost 13 years and to meet colleagues at the company who I haven’t seen for so long and who remain loyal to this great company. It spurs me on to set the strategic course for Alfred Kochen together with the managing directors, so that the brand will continue to exist for decades to come and Hamburg will successfully continue and expand its global relationships in the trade of industrial raw materials.
