Field report

My career at Alfred Kochen GmbH & Co. KG

I graduated from high school in 1998 and then went straight into basic military service. During my time with the federal government, I applied to the Alfred Kochen company in Hamburg, among others, for an apprenticeship as a “merchant in wholesale and foreign trade”. And indeed, I was invited and took a step into the offices on the 2nd floor of Poststraße 14-16 for the first time. Who could have guessed at that moment that I was already able to start my training in 1999 and was then taken on in one of the purchasing and sales departments after successfully completing it at the beginning of 2002.

What convinced me of Alfred Kochen at that time was the Hanseatic atmosphere in the offices in the middle of the city as well as the charismatic contact persons. The training concept also convinced me to take on full responsibility in the departments as a trainee.

From October 2002 I decided to start studying, but this did not stop Alfred Kochen or me from working in all areas of the company for the next 7 years. I literally did everything that needed to be done during that time as a student temp. From letter carriers and sample packers to buyers and sellers to janitors doing cleaning and painting work, all jobs were represented.

From 2010, after graduating in business administration, I then worked successfully in logistics, for well-known companies such as STUTE, Kühne & Nagel and DSV. There I acted as Operational Manager until the end of 2022 and was responsible for a logistics center with 50 employees.

Since September 2022, I have been back at Alfred Kochen in Poststraße in Hamburg, where I work as an authorized signatory and member of the management team. I think it’s fantastic to return after a break of almost 13 years and to meet colleagues again in the company whom I haven’t seen for so long and who continue to be loyal to this great company. It spurs me on, together with the managing directors, to set a strategic course for the Alfred Kochen company so that the brand will endure for the next decades and that Hamburg will successfully continue and expand its worldwide relations in the trade of industrial raw materials.
